Sometimes real life can be stranger and more corrupt than fiction making for some great movies revealing the dark world we live in ...
It seems today that the media uses the phrase “conspiracy theory” to counter alternative views to the mainstream narrative, no matter what the facts might be. However, all to often it is the case that these “theories” turn out to be actual conspiracies to benefit political or financial interests. In this short blog I highlight some of my favorite movies based real life conspiracies which in many cases still continue to this day.
Dallas Buyers Club (2013)
Starring Matthew McConaughey, “Dallas Buyers Club” unfolds the true story of Ron Woodroof, a Texas electrician diagnosed with AIDS in the midst of the epidemic’s early days. Frustrated by the lack of effective treatment, Woodroof embarks on a journey to find an alternative and discovers effective therapies which co-conspirators then try to shut down. The film explores the struggle of individuals against a conspiracy by the pharmaceutical industry and its ties with the health system, which together put the profit motives of pharma ahead of the needs of patients.
Spotlight (2015)
“Spotlight” casts a light on a massive global conspiracy within the Catholic Church, revealing widespread child abuse and subsequent cover-ups. With outstanding performances from Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, and Michael Keaton, the film exposes the lengths to which powerful institutions, will go to protect their own interests. A trend that continues to this day.
Concussion (2015)
Starring Will Smith, “Concussion” follows Dr. Bennet Omalu’s investigation into the long-term effects of head injuries in professional football players. The film exposes the NFL’s attempts to suppress the truth and downplay the dangers of the sport. As Omalu fights against powerful interests, “Concussion” sheds light on the conspiracy to conceal the risks associated with America’s favorite pastime to the detriment o the athletes who take part, highlighting the lengths corporations and their co-conspirators will go to.
Dark Waters (2019)
Starring Mark Ruffalo, “Dark Waters” is a legal thriller based on the true story of environmental attorney Robert Bilott. The film exposes the conspiracy of chemical company DuPont’s decades-long contamination of drinking water with the harmful chemical PFOA. As Bilott takes on the corporate giant, the movie unravels the shocking cover-up, environmental negligence, and legal battles surrounding the hazardous impact of industrial practices on public health and the environment. Many of these chemicals continue to pollute our day to day lives today.
Percy Vs Goliath (2020)
Featuring Christopher Walken, “Percy Vs Goliath” centers on the true story of Percy Schmeiser, a Canadian farmer who takes on the agrochemical giant Monsanto. The film delves into the conspiracy surrounding genetically modified seeds, corporate control of agriculture, and the legal battles fought by individuals against powerful corporations.
